Georgia Football uses the transfer portal to add another quarterback.

While everyone was focused on the CFP National Championship the other night, Georgia Football welcomed a new player via the portal. The Dawgs received former UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava this time. Maiava spent the previous season with the Rebels as a redshirt freshman. 3,085 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions were thrown by Maiava. In addition, Maiava ran for three touchdowns and 277 yards.

Originating in Honolulu, Hawaii, Maiava attended Henderson, Nevada, for her high school education. Three-star recruit Maiava decided to attend UNLV. After being redshirted in 2022, Maiava started for a strong UNLV squad. After the regular season concluded, Maiava considered transferring out of UNLV, but she eventually chose to visit the portal on January 2.

I won’t pretend to be very knowledgeable about UNLV football or Maiava. Having seen a few of their games in passing, I felt Maiava was a decent fit for them. Though it’s clear that Maiava believes he can compete with the big guys in the SEC, it’s puzzling to leave UNLV, where he is a starter, and come to Georgia to spend a year on the bench with no assurance of a starting position in 2025. However, Maiava is a gifted player, and the Dawgs will be happy that he is joining them.

This also raises concerns about Gunner Stockton’s future with the Dawgs. As spring and autumn practices get underway, it will be fascinating to observe the competition for the number-two slot on the quarterback depth chart. Stockton, Maiava, and Ryan Puglisi will all fight for the second position and be ready to take over as the starter at the end of the 2024 campaign.

Let’s finally discuss Kirby Smart’s abilities to manage the roster, retain the top players, and recruit them to Athens. What Smart has accomplished with N.I.L. and the transfer portal in this still-emerging era of college football is astounding. Kirby has won two national titles and is one of the program’s mainstays because he can keep this much talent and keep the show going.
