2024 offseason preview: The Bengals will put their turbulent season to the test
For the Cincinnati Bengals (9-8), who began the 2023 season 1-3 and battled for a postseason berth until the last three weeks while starting their backup quarterback in nearly as many games (nine) as their starter (10), things definitely didn’t go as planned.
The promotion of quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher to take Brian Callahan’s place, who departed the Bengals to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, is good news for quarterback Joe Burrow, who has been working closely with Pitcher for the past four years.
There are doubts regarding the availability of third-string wide receiver Tyler Boyd and standout receiver Tee Higgins. Higgins is probably going to be franchised, but Boyd might go unclaimed. Joe Mixon, the running back who finished 2023 with his fourth career 1,000-yard season, may be subject to cap hits, and Cincinnati may also lose its leading right tackle to free agency.
A defense that finished last in yards allowed per game, rated 28th against the pass, 26th against the run, and 21st in scoring also needs adjustments.
