Andy Roddick Offers Surprising Perspective on Carlos Alcaraz: “He Needs to Embrace Boredom”…
Carlos Alcaraz, one of tennis’ brightest young talents, has struggled to maintain strong form in recent weeks despite earlier success, like his ATP 500 win in Rotterdam. This inconsistency has caught the attention of former World No. 1 Andy Roddick, who shared some candid and unexpected thoughts.
Speaking on his podcast *Served*, Roddick explained that Alcaraz tends to get more aggressive when he’s not playing well or feeling confident—something that contrasts with how many all-time greats respond under pressure. “Most top players pull back a bit, play with more margin, and build consistency before taking risks. But Alcaraz does the opposite,” Roddick noted.
He suggested that Alcaraz might benefit from a more methodical approach. “I’d love to see him start a match by grinding his opponent down—force them to hit winners for six games straight because his ball is heavier,” Roddick said.

Still, he acknowledged that this strategy may not align with Alcaraz’s natural instincts. “He wants to control the match, and that’s his gift—but it can also be a liability if misused,” Roddick added. “Honestly, I think he needs to allow himself to feel bored sometimes on the court.”
