The Gamecocks have landed a highly sought-after transfer in 6-foot-6 guard Treysen Eaglestaff from North Dakota. Ranked as a four-star transfer, Eaglestaff is the No. 26 player in the portal and the No. 6 combo guard in his class, according to On3. He chose South Carolina over elite programs such as Kansas, Kentucky, and Gonzaga, highlighting his value as a coveted prospect.
Eaglestaff delivered impressive stats last season, averaging 18.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 41.6% from the field, 35.9% from three, and 79.4% from the free-throw line. His breakout performances included a 40-point game against No. 6 Alabama—where he sank eight three-pointers—and a remarkable 51-point showcase in the Summit League tournament. His versatile scoring ability makes him an immediate asset for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina needed a dynamic presence in the backcourt, and Eaglestaff could be the solution. Last season, the Gamecocks lacked a consistent playmaker, and his arrival should provide an immediate boost.
However, the team might not be finished making moves. Speculation is growing that former South Carolina and Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson Jr. may return to Columbia. Johnson, who transferred from Ohio State to South Carolina before becoming an All-SEC guard and leading the team to the NCAA Tournament, went back to OSU last season. He averaged 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists before stepping away mid-season for mental health reasons.
If Johnson rejoins the Gamecocks, he would team up with Eaglestaff and highly regarded freshman Eli Ellis, forming one of the most electrifying backcourts in the SEC for the upcoming season.
